Road Traffic Accident Variations in Lagos State, Nigeria: A Synopsis of Variance Spectra

    Get PDF
The major objective of this research is to examine the variation patterns of road traffic accident in Lagos State. The study used mostly secondary data; accident records and vehicular situation were obtained from the Nigeria police force and Federal Road Safety Commission. The data were obtained for a period of thirty two (32) years from 1970-2001. The analysis of the number and type of vehicles involved in road traffic accidents revealed that private cars, buses and taxis were more prone to accidents in Lagos State. The 16 harmonics for the selected L.G.A’s considered contribute above 90% of the total variance in the time series. This means that more than 90% of road traffic accident in Lagos State could be attributed to recklessness on the part of drivers, ignorance of high way codes, over speeding etc. Also, the dominant cycles of road traffic accidents observed in the study area have periodicities of 32.00 and 16.00 years with the most dominant being 32years. This means that the dominant and strongest road traffic accident pattern of Lagos State repeats itself every 32years. Based on the findings, recommendations were proffered. Keywords: Accident; traffic; variations; variance spectra; Lagos Stat

Spatial and Temporal Perspective on Road Traffic Accident Variations in Lagos Mainland, South-Western Nigeria

The research work uncovered the fact that the problem of road traffic accidents in Lagos Mainland more often than not occurs due to irresponsibility shown by road users and failure of the designated authorities and organizations to carry out their responsibilities. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) technique was employed in the examination of the statistical significance of the variation in the categories/degree (fatal, serious, minor) of accidents. Again analysis of variance technique was employed in the examination of the statistical significance of variance in the degree of accident over time (1998-2007) in Lagos Mainland. The result shows that there is a significant difference in the degree of accident overtime in Lagos Mainland. The study used mostly secondary Data, accident records and vehicular situation which was obtained from Nigerian Police Force and Federal Road Safety Commission. The data was obtained for a period of ten (10) years. The need for re-orientation of the land use pattern in the study area, better road network characteristics, Government should set up more police patrols for the highways in order to enforce road traffic regulation including speed limits and the need to establish Federal Road Safety Corps archive where accident records will be kept, collated and processed are desirable. Keywords: Lagos Mainland; traffic; Road, accident, variation

Road Transport System Management and Traffic in Lagos, South Western Nigeria

There is hardly any human society or human settlement system that canfunction efficiently and effectively without adequate, reliable, safe andaffordable transport systems management (TSM). The most fundamentalreason for this being the catalytic effect of transport development on socioeconomic growth and development. Transport can also play a significant role in territorial administration, political development, the defence of territories as well as in promoting regional cooperation. In Lagos State, there is a complex mix of landuses and all the major broad groupings of person movements in urban areas are made between them. Thus, while trips are made for a variety of purposes they are made to and from various landuses. Within any specified geographical area, certain landuses are greater attractors or generators of trips than others. However, the type of landuse in Lagos affects the flow of traffic to and from any location and therefore, the possibility of road traffic accidents

Preliminary Multivariate Analysis of the Factors of Socio- Economic Development of Nigeria - A Case Study of Delta State of Nigeria

The paper examined the socio-economic factors of development in the Delta state of Nigeria. The major source of data is secondary and the statistical technique is the step-wise multiple regression. The household income was used as an index of development while the socio-economic variables included population, education, and employment, capital water projects, housing unit, health centres, industries and police station. Four key socio-economic variables of population, health centres, employment and capital water projects were identified as being responsible for 80% of the variation in the development of Delta state of Nigeria among other variables. Solutions to identified problems were proffered

Transport and the Environment: Towards Reducing Road Traffic Emissions in Nigeria

In Nigeria much attention is given on general industrial pollution and pollution in oil industries with little reference on damage of pollution caused by mobile transportation sources of air pollution. The situation of increased pollution from mobile transportation sources is on the increase in per capital vehicle ownership, thus resulting to high congestion on Nigeria city roads and increase in the concentration of pollutants in the air, consequently, increasing health risk on human population. The paper therefore examined the concept of pollution and agents of pollution. Attention was given to air pollutants with particular reference to vehicular pollution. This paper suggested that for Nigeria government to avoid negative effects of transport on urban environment should broaden and intensify environmental policies to meet the needs of the present without compromising that of the future generation.Key words: Environment; emissions; transport; reducing; Nigeria

Epidemiology of Deaths from Road Traffic Accidents in Nigeria: A Baseline Study of Lagos State

    No full text
The purpose of this study is to examine the epidemiology of deaths from Road Traffic Accidents (RTAs) in Nigeria using Lagos State as a baseline study and to suggest preventive and corrective safety measures towards reducing the traffic accidents in the study area. The reported number of deaths from road traffic accidents in the 20 Local Government Areas of Lagos State from 1970-2010 were compared using the analysis of variance (ANOVA). The result showed that for the two factors, Local Government Areas and Years, the f-calculated of 18.32 and 7.43 respectively were higher than the f-tabular of 1.64 and 1.32 respectively at 0.05 level of significance. It then implies that the means for each of the factors reported number of deaths across the 20 L.G.A.’s in Lagos State and across different years were significantly different. Based on the findings recommendations were proffered.Key words: Epidemiology; traffic; accidents; Lagos; Nigeri
